Research Colloquium at SFU’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology in Surrey presents

Jeremy Owen Turner aka Wirxli Flimflam

October 3, 2007 at 2:30 pm

SFU Surrey Campus, Room 5380 (5th Floor Galleria)

Title: Wirxli Flimflam and Second Front: Performance Art Possibilities in Second Life

Abstract:

The popular virtual world, Second Life has garnered both mainstream media praise and derision in equal measure. Whereas Second Life (SL) is often criticized for merely being a commercial and corporate novelty, the artistic and creative potential within this user-generated metaverse is practically unlimited especially when the expression becomes virtually visceral and endowed with the sensation of "direct experience" rather than the passive discourse of "academic critical theory". For this SIAT presentation, Jeremy O. Turner (Wirxli Flimflam) and special guests will provide a live, realtime and in-world demonstration of the artistic possibilities for the emerging field of Performance Art in Second Life. With time permitting, Turner will also play machinima clips from the official Second Front DVD.

Bio:

Jeremy Owen Turner (b. 1974, Victoria, B.C.) is an internationally exhibiting new media artist and curator based in Vancouver. Turner has been an online performance artist since 1996 and has performed in virtual worlds since 2001. In 2003, Turner co-produced the very first in-world documentary of an avatar community called "AVATARA". As "Wirxli Flimflam" in 2006, Turner co-founded the pioneering performance art group in Second Life called "Second Front" as well as helped to establish Second Life's first dedicated art-scene on Odyssey Island.
